In Ukrainian culture, bread is more than food—it is a sacred symbol of life, hospitality, and blessing. From birth to weddings, religious holidays, and even funerals, special types of bread play an important role in marking life’s major milestones. One of the most meaningful is the korovai, a festive bread traditionally prepared for weddings, adorned with symbolic decorations that represent unity, prosperity, and community.

During this workshop, participants will experience Ukrainian traditions firsthand. They’ll grind wheat grains using a mortar, connecting with the ancient origins of bread-making. Using play dough, they will shape traditional decorative figurines used to adorn a korovai, reflecting customs once shared across generations. The workshop will end with a lively Ukrainian birthday round dance, celebrating togetherness through music and movement. Through these cultural expressions, guests will gain a deeper understanding of how Ukrainians honor life, family, and tradition—with bread always at the heart.
