The Taste of Language - Hmong

Presented by

Sandy Yang*

or

The Hmong people are an Indigenous agricultural group from East and Southeast Asian countries such as China, Thailand, Laos, and Vietnam. The culture has faced widespread persecution over centuries, which has led a large Hmong diaspora to settle in other countries.

Sandy Yang is a part of that diaspora, having moved from Thailand to America when she was 3.5 years old in 1979. In her workshop, Sandy shares the traditions of the Hmong culture that have endured over centuries and great distances. Sandy will teach participants the history of the Hmong and different phrases in the language, showcase Hmong attire that participants can use to dress up, and share a Hmong New Year celebration dance. Participants will end the workshop with more knowledge of Hmong history and an appreciation for what it's like to be a people without a country.
