Japanese Tea Ceremony

Presented by

Yoko Tanaka

or

In this workshop, Yoko Tanaka, Executive Director of Japan America Society of Iowa, introduces the concept of Omotenashi—the spirit of wholehearted hospitality—and the philosophy of Ichigo Ichie, which reminds us to treasure each encounter as it will never happen in exactly the same way again. While demonstrating each step of the tea-making process, she explains how the host thoughtfully prepares the experience with seasonal elements and considerations tailored to the guests. This attentiveness is at the heart of Omotenashi. During the tea ceremony, the host makes tea in silence, and the guests are invited to savor each moment with mindfulness and gratitude.
